Prolotherapy Treatment for TMJ Pain and TMD

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is part of the jaw. It operates as part of the hinge which allows the jaw to move while talking or chewing. Up to 35 million people in the US suffer from some form of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). These disorders range from temporary infections to chronic pain from arthritis. Most TMD is characterized by clicking and grinding of the jaw, along with headaches and discomfort. In extreme cases, chewing and talking may be difficult.

Common symptoms of TMD include:

  • Jaw pain
  • Stiffness in the mouth or jaw including “locking”
  • Neck pain
  • Facial pain
  • Ear pain
  • Clicking while moving the jaw
  • Dizziness or headache

Since there are many different symptoms and a variety of different causes, finding the right treatment for TMJ pain is difficult. As early as 1937, a dentist from Chicago used an injection treatment for TMJ cases. Today, we know this treatment as prolotherapy. Rather than limit yourself to only eating soft foods for the rest of your life, prolotherapy may be the treatment for you.

A consultation by Dr. Neal Pollack will help you on the path to living pain free. For many with TMJ pain, prolotherapy is used as an alternative for invasive surgery or long-term medications.

Causes

TMD has many causes, including:

  • Jaw Injury
  • Dental Injuries or Procedures
  • General Infection
  • Arthritis
  • Diseases

There are also cases of TMD in which there is no clear cause. This has led to speculation of genetic predispositions or environmental factors to be blamed. In particular, it tends to affect women more than men, meaning there might be a hormonal component to some cases.

Treatment for Foot and Ankle Pain

Many Causes, One Solution

TMJ is a condition caused by damage to the jaw and/or muscles leading to pain in your head and neck. Blunt force trauma, whiplash, shaking, stress, and teeth grinding can contribute to the development of TMJ. There are also cases without a physical cause. No matter the cause of your TMD, prolotherapy is an alternative to surgery for pain relief.
